The connecting thread of my life has been a passion for listening to people’s stories. My first career was documentary filmmaker. I spent a few happy and interesting years learning about, interviewing, and filming boxers, girls at a boarding school, and dentists, among others.

Ultimately, it wasn’t enough for me just to listen and film. I wanted to help people, to find the best in them, and help them see the best in themselves. Psychology has been a perfect fit for me. I have yet to work with someone I haven’t felt connected to and admired for making their way through the challenges and difficulties of life.

As a psychologist, I am curious, open, warm, and accepting, and also challenging. I will try to see you for who you are and reflect that back to you as accurately as possible. With most of my clients, I spend a lot of time listening, some of the time laughing, occasionally sharing tears, always being honest and open.

In my personal life, I enjoy hiking, spending time with my husband and young daughters, and baking. I love travel, but love coming home to Salt Lake City even more.

Dr. Jim Asbrand

I have always been interested in how people have come to see the world as they do. At Carnegie-Mellon University, I studied History and English, immersing myself in the stories, ideas, and cultures that shaped our world. I also learned I needed to help others and became a founding member of the first student-run suicide hotline at CMU.

After graduating, I taught at an alternative high school in Southern California. It was there that I became aware of the pervasive experience of trauma, how it shaped the lives of my students and their families, and, most importantly, the resilient nature of people. After earning my doctorate in Counseling Psychology, I worked as a PTSD psychologist at the VA, helping veterans with combat and sexual trauma. Most recently I have been the Military Sexual Trauma (MST) Coordinator for the Salt Lake City VA.

As a psychologist, it is an honor and privilege to get to know my clients. My work involves helping people overcome barriers, whether difficult past experiences or current struggles, and achieve a healthy balance so they can be the person they want to be. In working together, my clients and I confront serious, sometimes painful issues while not losing sight of the beauty and humor in life.

When not at work, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, working out, traveling, reading, and being a nerd.

My approach is motivated by my experience that positive change is possible, especially given the right kind of help. I believe that even in difficult circumstances, individuals can build awareness and develop skills that can change their lives for the better.

I strive to create a therapeutic experience unique to the individuals I work with. I am experienced at bridging evidence-based approaches to individual needs. I work collaboratively with clients to alleviate emotional distress, promote self-investigation and foster movement toward a more meaningful life. The process of change is both challenging and rewarding – I offer a nonjudgmental, supportive stance, grounded in clinical expertise, to aid in this process.

I have extensive experience working with couples. I am certified in the most scientifically-backed approaches to helping couples, including Gottman levels 1, 2 and 3, Integrative Behavioral Couples Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Conjoint therapy. I assist couples in creating healthier relationships by exploring stories, increasing emotional awareness and teaching effective communication techniques, all in the service of restored understanding and increased intimacy.

My goal is to meet you wherever you may be in order to support and determine the direction in which you want to move forward. I give you a lot of credit for taking a huge step towards creating change in your life by seeking out support. Thank you for taking the time to learn about my approach to therapy.

Therapy can and will look different for every individual. I work to utilize evidence-based intervention, tailored to your specific needs and goals, to best address what is bringing you to counseling. Therapy is hard work, but it can also be fun, eye-opening, and rewarding. I strive to create a warm, collaborative, and safe environment where you can openly explore your concerns, goals, and desires for creating the change you seek. This includes examining one’s thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and patterns over time. Discussion of goals are an ongoing part of counseling and will be unique to your needs (e.g., some people seek counseling due to worries or feeling down, while others are interested in exploring relationships or adjusting to life transitions).

I would love to talk with you about your goals and how counseling may help get you there. I hope to have the privilege of getting to know you and wish you well.

Dr. Austin Simpson

I believe in creating a warm, nonjudgmental, and supportive environment, where a strong therapeutic relationship is paramount. I offer a collaborative, integrative, and evidence-based approach, and tailor treatment toward each person’s unique background and presenting concern. That being said, I often draw from principles of mindfulness, neuroscience, and cognitive-behavioral therapies (ACT, CBT, DBT), while staying attuned to the latest research in the mental health field. Psychological change can take on many forms, but we will work toward cultivating self-compassion and flexibility, as well as develop actionable skills to specifically target your concerns. I strive to be honest, open, and direct with my patients, and challenge them in ways that foster insight and lead a more value-driven lifestyle.

I earned both my Masters and Doctorate in clinical psychology from Pacific University in Oregon. While the bulk of my training has been in neuropsychological assessment, I have always found great passion and fulfillment in providing psychotherapy. Over the years, I have seen both individuals and couples across various backgrounds and mental health conditions, such as trauma, depression, anxiety, life stress/adjustment, brain injury, and social/relationship issues. I have also had the privilege of training across various settings including community mental health, college counseling, and VA medical centers. Currently, I am a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Utah specializing in neuropsychological assessment.

In my free time, I enjoy spending time in the outdoors with my family and friends. I especially enjoy traveling, camping, and anything to do with water, such as snowboarding, paddle boarding, and wakeboarding/waterskiing.

Dr. Jason Goodson

I earned my PhD from Utah State University. I then completed a 2-year postdoctoral fellowship through Dartmouth Medical School and received specialized training in cognitive-behavioral for anxiety- and trauma-related conditions. I have spent my career working in with anxiety, trauma, and depression and have published several scientific articles in these areas.  I have also developed my own treatment protocols for both anxiety and trauma-related disorders and trained hundreds of clinicians in the delivery of these treatments.

While I have a lot of interests, I am first and foremost a clinician. I strive to provide the best possible treatment to all my clients. I take a genuine interest in the unique and individual experiences of my clients, and seek to understanding what is keeping them stuck. I can then bring to bear years of experience and develop interventions specific to my clients. While I can propose many suggestions, I honor my clients’ preferences and choices by giving them the final say in what interventions are used. I have found this approach to be tolerable to clients as well as highly effective in reducing symptoms and improving quality of life.

On a personal note, I was raised in the Salt Lake area and then moved away for over 20 years.  We relocated back around 4 years ago and I could not be happier.  Family and friends form the corner stone of my life, but I’m also an avid pickleball player.   This and working in my yard are my main hobbies.  I am also a dedicated meditator and greatly value the calm this brings amidst the chaos of life.  I look forward to working together with the shared purpose of achieving the goals that bring you to therapy at this time.
